Abstract

On-station yield gains in improved cowpea rarely survive contact with farmer practice. Across three cropping seasons we monitored 480 farmer-managed plots in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states. Mean grain yield rose 34% in the improved varieties, but the gap narrowed sharply where sowing was delayed past the second week of the rains. Adoption at season three reached 58% among farmers who received seed plus a single extension visit, against 21% for seed alone. Yield advantage alone did not predict adoption; access to a reliable seed source did.
